Upper Deck Trilogy Hockey Cards are back for 2013-14

By Ryan Cracknell 2013-14 Upper Deck Trilogy Hockey sees the brand return after a three-year absence. But this isn't the same Trilogy as the last one that was released in 2009-10. The new high-end configuration centers on autographs and only the top rookies available for the set. Every 2013-14 Upper Deck Trilogy Hockey hobby box comes with three mini boxes. Each mini box comes with three packs. The hits in every mini box break down to a pair of autographs and either a memorabilia card or a new UD Crystal card, making Trilogy a hit-per-pack product. A precursor to the double rookie class that will headline sets released after the start of the 2013-14 season, Trilogy focuses on the best players to debut during the shortened 2012-13 season. Nail Yakupov, Vladimir Tarasenko, Alex Galchenyuk and Jonathan Huberdeau are among the rookie cards in 2013-14 Upper Deck Trilogy Hockey. Just 33 rookies make the cut in the release, helping ensure a stronger upside. Rookie Signature Premieres have three levels for each player. Inserted one per mini box, they're numbered to 699, 399 and 49. Triple rookie autographs are numbered to 25. Signature Pucks use a puck face as the signing surface. Besides basic versions, Trilogy also has rare Retro Logo (#/13) and Shield Logo (#/3) cards. Combining to fall one per box are Ice Scripts and Clear Cut Combos. Printed on plexiglass, it gives the signatures a distinct look. Past Ice Scripts cards have held up extremely well on the secondary market. Clear Cut Combos come with a pair of autographs in three levels of rarity. Bringing more of the plexiglass are UD Crystal. Inserted one per box, these high-end inserts come in three tiers each of active, retired and rookie players. Rounding out the 2013-14 Upper Deck Trilogy Hockey hits are Three Star Spotlight triple jersey cards. Past, Present & Future offer a generational look at the game. There are also National Trios cards. The 2013-14 Upper Deck Trilogy Hockey base set has 100 cards. Estimated Release Date: 7/2/13 Product Configuration: 9 packs per box, 5 cards per pack Price Point: High-End Hockey Card Target Audience: Autograph Collectors, Rookie Card Collectors 2013-14 Upper Deck Trilogy Hockey Box Break 3 Rookie Autographs 1 Ice Scripts or Clear Cut Combos Autograph 1 Signature Pucks Card 1 Additional Autograph 1 UD Crystal Plexiglass Card 2 Triple Jersey Cards 45 Total Cards

2012-13 SP Authentic Hockey Cards releasing in June!

2/25/13 - by Ryan Cracknell
2012-13 SP Authentic Hockey builds off the brand's longstanding legacy among puck fans, delivering plenty of autographs, memorabilia and additional content originally planned for other sets. As with past years, autographs lead the chase. Every hobby box comes three signatures, at least one of which is an autographed Future Watch rookie card. Traditionally, Future Watch cards rank among the player's top rookie cards. Signatures can also be found on Limited Variations, which also have Autographed Patch versions, and Sign of the Times cards. Authentic Moments and Team Canada Moments are highlighted by dated photos capturing specific moments and events. Every box has four single-player Authentic Moments cards, one multi-player card and a pair of Team Canada Moments cards. Both have autographed versions as well. Going back to the brand's early days are 1994-95 SP Retro cards, which are inserted four per box. Collectors can also look for Die-Cut Autograph cards, which fall about three per case. Thanks to the labor dispute that cut the NHL season short, Upper Deck cancelled several products when it was announced all rookies playing for the first time in 2012-13 would be held back until 2013-14 products. Some of that content has been included in 2012-13 SP Authentic Hockey. Upper Deck Update, cards originally planned for Upper Deck Series 2, fall 1:6 packs (four per box). At least two UD Exclusives parallels are in every case. MVP Rookie Updates have also been brought over to 2012-13 SP Authentic Hockey, with one or two in every box. While 2012-13 SPx Hockey was also cancelled as a full-fledged, bonus SPx packs found their way into 2012-13 SP Authentic Hockey. Among the cards in these packs are Autographed Patch rookie cards. Estimated Release Date: 6/13 Product Configuration: 24 packs per box, 5 cards per pack Price Point: Mid-End Hockey Card Target Audience: Autograph Collectors, Rookie Card Collectors, SP Authentic Fans, Memorabilia Collectors 2012-13 SP Authentic Hockey Box Break 1 Autographed Future Watch Rookie Card 2 Additional Autographs 4 Authentic Moments 1 Multi-Player Authentic Moments 2 Team Canada Moments 4 1994-95 SP Retro Cards 4 Upper Deck Update Cards 1 MVP Rookie Update 120 Total Cards

National Hockey Card Day Returns to the U.S. on Feb. 16

by Tom Bartsch: Upper Deck is helping to celebrate the return of hockey with National Hockey Card Day in the U.S. on Feb. 16. Upper Deck will be working with the company’s network of Certified Diamond Dealers to give out hundreds of thousands of exclusive “National Hockey Card Day” NHL trading card packs for free throughout the U.S. All puck fans need to do is head out on Saturday and visit a participating retailer to receive a free National Hockey Card Day pack. “The only thing better than Upper Deck NHL cards is free Upper Deck NHL cards,” said Chris Carlin, Upper Deck’s sports marketing and social media manager. “On Saturday, Feb. 16, hockey fans throughout the United States are invited to get involved in the great hobby of collecting NHL trading cards on National Hockey Card Day. All fans have to do is drop in on a participating shop that day to receive a free National Hockey Card Day pack that feature some of the top stars in the NHL!” The main draw for collectors to visit participating retailers is the National Hockey Card Day set itself. The 16-card set with the special “National Hockey Card Day” logo on the front consists of three subsets that pay tribute to American-born players and international players on U.S. based NHL franchises. On the “America’s Franchises” set fans can find cards of Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh Penguins), Alexander Ovechkin (Washington Capitals), Ilya Kovalchuk (New Jersey Devils), Henrik Lundqvist (New York Rangers) and Anze Kopitar (Los Angeles Kings). In the “Stars in Stripes” set look for American-born players like Zach Parise (Minnesota Wild), Jonathan Quick (Los Angeles Kings), Patrick Kane (Chicago Blackhawks), Dustin Brown (Los Angeles Kings) and Ryan Miller (Buffalo Sabres). And in the “American Icons” set collectors can capture cards of legends like Mike Modano, Brett Hull, Neal Broten, Tim Thomas and Brian Leetch. Packs will yield five randomly assorted cards featuring the aforementioned players, while a special limited 16th card featuring Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick celebrating his 2012 Stanley Cup victory last season can be had as a gift with purchase from shop owners while supplies last. Some lucky collectors may also find some other special surprises in National Hockey Card Day packs like rare autograph cards. “Of all professional sports leagues, the NHL has the most passionate fan base,” said Mike Fruitman, owner of Mike’s Stadium Sports Cards in Aurora, Colorado. “Being able to offer collectors free National Hockey Day packs with a bonus card of Jonathan Quick will be the perfect complement to hockey’s return. We have lined up hundreds of packs and we will be sure to stock up on loads of great Upper Deck hockey cards to make sure we have enough to go around.” For more information on National Hockey Card Day in the U.S. and to view a list of participating retailers, visit www.upperdeck.com. Also, Upper Deck has set up a Facebook page for the event and will be running a variety of promotions and giveaways on the page so make sure to “like” it today: http://www.facebook.com/NationalHockeyCardDay. National Hockey Card Day will take Feb. 9 in Canada, with the same principles in play.

NHL, NHLPA agree to framework of new CBA

Sunday, 01.06.2013 / 7:27 AM / News By Shawn P. Roarke - NHL.com Senior Managing Editor NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association reached agreement on the framework of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement early Sunday morning. After a marathon 16-plus hour negotiating session at the Sofitel Hotel that began Saturday afternoon, the sides announced an agreement in principle shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday. The League did not announce the start date of the season or the number of games each team will play. Those details will be announced soon. The deal, agreed to at approximately 4:40 a.m., was announced jointly by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr in the same hotel conference room where the negotiations were conducted with the assistance of Scot Beckenbaugh, Deputy Director for Mediation Services for the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. "Don Fehr and I are here to tell you that we have reached an agreement on the framework of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the details of which need to be put to paper," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "We have to dot a lot of I's and cross a lot of T's. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the basic framework has been agreed upon. We have to go through a ratification process and the Board of Governors has to approve it from the League side and, obviously, the players have to approve it as well. We are not in a position to give you information right now about schedule, when we are starting. It's early in the morning and we have been at this all day and all night, obviously. But, we will be back to you very shortly, hopefully, later today with more information in that regard." Fehr, meanwhile expressed an eagerness for his constituency to get back to playing hockey after a negotiation that stretched across 113 days. "Any process like this in the system we have is difficult; it can be long," Fehr said. "I've said repeatedly throughout this process, somebody would say, 'What do you see ahead?' And, the answer was, 'You get up tomorrow and you try to find a way to do it and you keep doing that until you find a way to succeed. "As Gary just indicated, we have the framework of a deal. We have to do the legal work and we have to do the constituent-communication work. At least, from my [standpoint], and I'm sure Gary's too, we need to let them know the details before we tell all of you. Having said that, hopefully, we're at a place where all those things will proceed fairly rapidly and with some dispatch and we'll get back to what we used to call business as usual as fast as we can." Beckenbaugh, who took part in these negotiations at three different junctures of the overall process, worked with both sides from this past Wednesday until the deal was finalized Sunday morning. Commissioner Bettman praised the work of Beckenbaugh and thanked the mediator for the role he played in the potential settlement. "I want to recognize the extraordinary contribution that my colleague, Scot Beckenbaugh, Deputy Director for Mediation Services, made in providing herculean assistance of the highest caliber to the parties throughout the most critical periods in the negotiations," FMCS Director George Cohen said as part of a statement. The new CBA, which still must be drafted and formerly approved by both parties, would replace the agreement that expired Sept. 15. More to come.

“A rookie is just not a rookie until they have an Upper Deck ‘Young Gun’ card produced of them,” said Josh Zusman, Upper Deck’s Hockey brand manager. “This year’s rookie crop is performing really well to start off the season so we are excited to see they are living up to the hype. We think fans will jump at the chance to own rookie cards of these future stars.”

There are more than just rookies to be found in 2011-12 NHL Upper Deck Series One however. The release will be loaded with autograph cards, memorabilia cards and other unique inserts that will excite hockey fans. A new insert set in the product is “Honored Members” which pays tribute to Hall-of-Fame legends on a unique acetate card, giving it the look of plaques found in the Hall. Another new addition are the UD Canvas cards that have the look and feel of a painted card.

Upper Deck’s hockey team has worked hard to re-imagine the popular “Heroes” insert series. This season the insert set has been expanded to showcase a variety of hockey greats from the 1950’s. There is also an autographed version of these cards that are limited to just fifteen copies each. Additionally there is one very rare painted autograph card in the set that features autographs of Brett Hull, Andy Bathgate and Gordie Howe numbered to just ten copies.

Additionally, Upper Deck was able to secure all the autograph cards prior to launch so the set will release with zero redemption exchange cards in packs. Upper Deck’s 2011-12 Series One Hockey packs hold eight cards in every pack and 24 packs per box. The product is in stock and available at DCS Sports Cards!

2011-12 NHL rookies making an impact

Here's a list of NHL rookies that are making an impact in the NHL so far. Look for these rookies and more in Upper Deck series 1 hockey releasing November 9th!

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft recorded a hat trick in just his third NHL contest, collecting all three Edmonton goals against the Stanley Cup finalist Canucks. It’s easy to see why his impact is already being felt, and even more so why collectors are thrilled at the prospects of nabbing one of his RC’s!
Gabriel Landeskog – It didn’t take any time for the second pick in the 2011 Draft to jump right into Colorado’s top six, instantly becoming a regular on a top line. Tabbed as the “Most NHL Ready” of this year’s crop, Landeskog has done nothing to disappoint, and is a key reason why the Avs have jumped out to a quick start to the season.
Sean Couturier – After leading the Flyers in pre-season scoring, the much-heralded Couturier cracked Philly’s lineup to open the season. He continued his strong play when the games counted, collecting his first helper in game No. 3, then chalked up three more points less than a week later.
Brett Connolly – Connolly was an absolute force with Prince George (CHL), showing why Steve Yzerman and the Lightning used their first pick in 2010 to select the sniping centerman. Moreover, Connolly stuck with Tampa this fall after displaying his talents and wherewithal to light the lamp, no matter how stiff the competition.
Cody Hodgson – One viewed as a premier sniper with Brampton (OHL) and the Canadian World Junior team, Hodgson’s stock has steadily been on the rise after battling through a couple injury-riddled seasons. He skills with the puck have never been questioned, and his desire to reach the Canucks’ top two lines is now being realized, through hard work, perseverance and the determination to prove he’s still the player many scouts drooled over just two years ago.
Mark Scheifele – With much of the early 2011-12 hype surrounding the return of hockey to Winnipeg, the Jets’ first choice in this year’s draft did nothing to disappoint. Scheifele scored his first NHL goal in Toronto, giving his club a 3-1 lead in a battle against the Leafs. Much more is expected, and will come, from this talented forward who has the size to match.
Ryan Johansen – The Blue Jackets’ skill has been on the rise, and Johansen’s talents are now firmly in the mix. Slated to be the second-line center, many hockey pundits are predicting great things for Johansen. With a ton of hockey sense, great puck awareness and a proclivity for putting points on the board in Juniors – 161 total in just 134 games – it’s only a matter of time before it clicks at the NHL level.
Jake Gardiner – When a GM drafts you in one place (Anaheim), then trades for you when he gets to another club (Toronto), there’s a reason for it. And when that GM’s name is Brian Burke, there’s good reason for it – you’re quite the hockey player. With blazing speed, tremendous offensive upside and a very solid all-around game, Gardiner figures to be a stalwart on the Leafs’ blueline. And if Burke’s affinity for this blueliner proves to be accurate, Toronto fans will be cheering for years.
Mika Zibanejad – Selected with the sixth pick in the 2011 Draft, Zibanejad excelled in Sweden the past three seasons. He put up 21 points in 27 contests for Djurgardens of the Super-Elite Junior squad before posting five goals in the Elite league last year. Knowing that he jumped into a top-six forward role to start the season gives great indication of what lies ahead for this playmaking winger.
Adam Larsson – Certainly one of the most impressive all-around players to be drafted in June, Larsson easily cracked the Devils lineup to start the year. He projects as a tremendous two-way player from the blueline, one who can be counted on to register 35-40 points a year while playing very solid defense. It should just be a matter of time before Larsson is regarded as an elite defenseman.
David Rundblad – Well known for being one of the top all-around rearguard prospects in the game today, Rundblad brings a wealth of offensive talent to Ottawa. He posted 50 points in 55 Swedish Elite League contests, giving Senators’ brass all the confidence needed to entrench him on the blueline.
Tim Erixon – The former first-round pick of the Flames is now squarely in the Rangers’ paws, and they don’t figure to let go anytime soon. With a booming shot and a great sense of the game, Erixon’s stellar two-way play figures to net him large minutes from the get-go. His skating ability gives him a leg up on many youngsters, as he can make up ground in a hurry.
Joe Colborne – Possessing great size (6-foot-5), soft hands and a superb touch around the net, Colborne’s time in Toronto is coming – soon. Unlike some youngsters who made the NHL jump right off the bat, Colborne has been fine-tuning his immense talents, and will undoubtedly make Maple Leafs fans happy with his efforts in the near future. Even more, his hard work is a trait that no one questions, and his great character backs it up that much further.
Matt Read – Acclimating to the NHL was not a challenge for Read, who put up points in his second and third NHL contests before posting a superb 4-point effort in Game No. 5. Those type of stand-out nights already have Flyers fans screaming for more, and Read appears ready to give it to them.
Matt Frattin – There isn’t a better place in hockey to get thousands and thousands of people thrilled with your heroics than Toronto. So when Frattin scored the decisive goal in a shootout vs. Winnipeg (Oct. 19), it certainly sent Leafs’ fans home with memories of Frattin’s effort. Just three games later, he notched his first point, taking another step toward making an impact in Toronto.
Brandon Saad – A strong power forward with good upside, Saad could be a very nice addition to the Hawks lineup. Given Chicago’s wealth of high-end skill and ability to light the lamp, Saad should fit right in and take his game to a new level.
Denis Savard – The Blue Jackets’ top defensive prospect possesses great puck-moving skills, and can put up points like few rearguards can (77 points in 64 regular season games). His efforts in the QMJHL were certainly noteworthy, as he took home the Butch Bouchard Trophy for best defenseman in the league.
Andy Miele – The reigning Hobey Baker winner made his debut on Oct. 23rd. He figures to make many more notable appearances for the Coyotes, who will be looking to utilize his offensive talents that he displayed with Miami (OH), when he posted 71 points in just 39 NCAA contests during his senior year.
